2024 CSA Week 6

Can you believe that this week marks the end of the first quarter of the season?  The summer is flying by.  After several years of limited garden, my family decided to put in a large garden this year with the intention of preserving as much as we can.  I used to can and freeze a ton of fruits and veggies, but I got away from much of it due to busyness.  But with more people helping with the garden and preserving, it's not as huge of a burden.  We're enjoying our first cucumbers and zucchini from the garden, and we should have cherry tomatoes soon.  My teens love to eat the fruits of their labor.  I had to ask them to stop eating all the cucumbers because I need them for a salad this weekend.  Do you preserve anything from your CSA box or garden?

Quarterly Payments

For those on the payment plan, be sure to pay your second quarterly payment if you haven't already.  If you have a card or bank account on file, then you were already charged.  If you don't have a form of payment saved, then you were emailed a payment request.  You can see the order for the quarterly payment on your Orders Page (scroll through recent orders).  All payments must be received by 7/18 or you won't receive your Week 7 store credit.

What's up with the initials in product names?

The farm initials that you see after many products in our store helps us easily differentiate when we're packing shares.  For example, when there are three or four farms with green beans, it's much easier for our packers to see at a glance which beans you ordered.  Some of our customers have favorite farms that they like to order from, so it's a quick visual for you, too.

This Week's Features

This is B week for biweekly shares.

  • Blueberries are still going strong, but this week or next might be the final week.
  • Cherry tomatoes from Underhill Produce, but just 4 pints available this week, so be quick!
  • Spinach from Harmony Grove Farm is flourishing, so there's lots available this week.

Adam Dean operates Pasture Maid Creamery located outside of New Castle.  With a focus on sustainable farming practices and high-quality ingredients, Pasture Maid Creamery offers a range of handcrafted products that showcase the natural flavors of their milk.

" Our family has been farming the same land continuously since 1867. We proudly pasture our cows, and always have.  We value simple, "eatable" cheese that you don't have to be a connoisseur to enjoy. As a result we stick to the classics: cheddar, colby, pepper jack, and a farmer's style. We hope our cheeses can be an intro to the world of farmstead cheese that the whole family will enjoy!

Our 150 girls, all with names, graze native meadows from early March to late November and through winter their diet mainly consists of organic grass/hay raised here on the farm. For that matter all of the cows feed is raised right here. We also have a closed herd, which means we do not buy cows to maintain our numbers. We usually sell some young heifers off each year, since our cows live three times the average age of an American dairy cow and we just don't have the acreage for all that are born here. By raising all our own feed and having a closed herd we are able to maintain very high quality milk to make cheese with."

Their creamline milk is lightly pasteurized and non-homogenized, so you can see the line of delicious cream through the bottle.  Just shake and enjoy.  If you order milk, please be sure to return the bottles.
