2024 CSA Week 5

I trust you all had a great Independence Day celebration, and some are continuing the fun into the weekend.  Your farmers still worked through the holiday, but we also carved out some family time to celebrate.

Some of us have received some much-needed rain in the past few days, while others have remained mostly dry.  There were two days when we received about an inch of rain on our farm, but when I spoke with another farmer to the south, he hadn't received more than a few drops.  Most of the plants love the heat and humidity and are beginning to flourish.

This is A Week for biweekly shares.

This Week's Features

  • Willow Brook Farms joins us with their first produce of the season this week.  Check out their various herbs, green beans, and onions.  And they have a few flower bouquets!
  • Yellow Creek Farm has the first tomatoes of the season!!!  Just 7 pounds available, so be quick!  Plus they have beans, beets, and beet greens.
  • Mickley Farm is digging their first red potatoes this week.  Great for fresh potato salad!
  • Underhill Produce has early jalapeno peppers and banana peppers.  Again, just a few bags!
  • Harmony Grove Farm features spinach, baby kale, and basil this week, as well as many more of their usual greens and micros.
  • Glacial Till Farm sends us scallions, spring onions, and curly kale.
  • Blueberries from Hochstetler Farm are going strong.  They're so easy to throw in a zipper bag and freeze to use over the winter.
  • Chicken breast and soup bone sale:  Moose Family Farm has chickens and beef at the processor right now, so they need to make room in their freezers.  Their split chicken breast and meaty beef soup bones are on sale again BUY 3 GET 1 FREE (25% savings!).  Simply order three and we will include a fourth for free.  Inventory has just been updated, so there's plenty of sizes from which to choose.
  • For those of you who missed it last week, we have a new mushroom farmer!  Bounty Beneath Mushroom Farm is located near Worthington PA.

Featured Business

Throughout the spring, I featured our member farms in a series of emails so you could get to know them a little bit.  (You can find the emails on our blog).  Now I'll start a series featuring the businesses and farms that produce some of the other products that we offer.

Middlefield Original Cheese Co-op is a family-owned cooperative located about 30 miles east of Cleveland. The co-op was started back in 1956. There are 90 Co-op members, 98% of whom are Amish. Most of our milk comes in 10 gallon cans from farms throughout northeastern Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania. Most of the cows are milked by hand.

All of our cheese is natural, made from milk from cows that are not treated with BST hormone. We are a USDA approved plant.  Our cheese is made by the traditional method in vats. Making each vat individually ensures a quality product for our customers.

NWPA Growers carries a variety of Middlefield Cheese, including two certified organic varieties and several made from grass fed cow milk.
